Description
Classic Apple Pie Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 measures of flour (divided)
- Salt
- Shortening
- Water
- Sugar
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Lemon juice
- Apple slices
- Butter
Prepare the Pie Crust
In a large bowl, combine the first measure of flour, salt, and shortening. Use a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually stir in the water with a fork, forming the dough into a ball. Lightly flour a board and roll out the dough to an 11–12-inch diameter. Fit it into a 9-inch pie pan and flute the edges for a decorative finish.
Prepare the Apple Filling
In a separate bowl, mix sugar, the second measure of flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss the apple slices in this mixture until evenly coated. Arrange the apples neatly in the prepared pie crust.
Make the Topping
Combine sugar and flour in a bowl. Cut in butter using a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple filling.
Bake the Pie
Place the pie inside a large paper bag and put the bag on a baking sheet. Loosely fold the open end of the bag underneath. Bake at the recommended temperature until the apples are tender, about 50–60 minutes.
Serving Tips
Allow the pie to cool slightly before slicing. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream for extra indulgence. The paper bag method helps prevent the pie from browning too quickly while keeping the filling juicy.
Optional Variations
- Add a pinch of cloves for extra spice.
- Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for balanced flavor.
- Sprinkle a little coarse sugar on top before baking for a golden crust.
